The Animal Law Foundation has published a new report revealing that the UK is failing to enforce its own laws. Despite a legal ban on the routine tail docking of pigs, the practice remains widespread – even though other European countries have already shown it doesn't have to be this way.

The Animal Law Foundation is a collective of lawyers and those interested in animal protection, with the aim of ensuring a robust legal framework for animals.
The Animal Law Foundation undertakes legal research, provides information and education on animal law and where necessary will bring legal challenges to ensure that animal law is being interpreted and applied as intended.
“It is our goal to make sure that the laws that are fought so hard for by members of the public, NGOs and members of Parliament are applied in practice. So often we see the illusion of an issue being dealt with because a law is passed; however, can a law even be called a law if that law is not being enforced? The Animal Law Foundation will work to make sure that the legal protections afforded to animals are more than just a piece of paper.”

What we do

We research UK animal protection laws to understand their origins, what they mean and whether they are being applied. Our legal research identifies unlawful interpretations of current laws and enforcement gaps, supporting stronger legal protections for animals.

We engage with policymakers, regulators, and institutions to push for animal laws to be understood and applied in practice.

We produce accessible resources to help the public, industry, regulators and decision-makers understand the laws that exist to protect animals and where there are challenges.

We support or initiate legal action where it's needed to clarify the law and ensure it’s applied correctly. Through litigation, we aim to set strong precedents, raise standards, and hold those that break the law and those who should be enforcing the law to account.
